A natal chart is a snapshot of exactly where the sun, moon and planets were positioned at the moment and place you were born. It's the raw material every astrology reading works from, and it's completely unique to you, built from your birth date, time and location.
What a Natal Chart Actually Shows
The chart maps out placements (which sign each planet was in), houses (which area of life those placements relate to) and aspects (the angles planets make to each other). Read together, this becomes less a list of facts and more a kind of signature, a particular pattern of tension and ease that was already present the day you arrived.
Western Tropical vs Sidereal Vedic
There are different traditions for reading a chart. Western tropical astrology (the more familiar sun-sign system in most of the English-speaking world) measures the sky relative to the seasons. Sidereal Vedic astrology measures it relative to the actual, current position of the constellations, which shifts the placements slightly. Both are legitimate, separate traditions, not competing claims about the same thing, which is why a full reading can draw on both rather than picking one as "correct."
